Amazon Best-selling Author Wins Three More Awards at the New York and Beach Book Festivals

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., June 13, 2012 — The new book called Do NOT Invent Buggy Whips by award-winning and Amazon best-selling author Ken Thurber has been notified that it was named Runner Up in the How to category at the 2012 Beach Book festival. Submitted works are judged for general excellence, particularly their potential to be an engaging beach read this summer season. The Beach Book Festival annually spotlights the hottest reads of the summer. The authors will be honored at a private awards ceremony to be held June 22 at the Grolier Club in Manhattan. This is the fifth award for the new book, which also became an Amazon bestseller the week of its official launch.

The official launch of Do NOT Invent Buggy Whips was May 22. In that week it ranked in the top 10 in two categories – Small Business Entrepreneurship (#3) and Entrepreneurship (#3). It also ranked #35 in the Business and Investing category, and most remarkably it ranked #113 overall for all books on Amazon.

The book's main theme of product reinvention and personal reinvention has resonated with reviewers and readers as evidenced by its awards and Amazon rankings. According to the author, Ken Thurber, Do NOT Invent had its genesis in unresolved questions and comments from his first book – Big Wave Surfing – Extreme Technology Development, Management, Marketing and Investing.

According to Thurber, "I found that my first book raised many questions, chief among them was – how do people innovate and how do you define innovation." Accordingly the main theme of the book is about reinvention and understanding product positioning. In the pages of Do NOT Invent you'll find case studies of products like the Ford Mustang, the Segway and the iPod. The book examines why some products get it right while others don't quite measure up.

Big Wave Surfing book takes two more honors

Big Wave Surfing, Dr. Thurber's first non-fiction business book, was also recognized at the same Beach Book festival with an honorable mention in the Business category. The book was also recognized with an honorable mention by the New York Book Festival in the category of General Non-Fiction.

These new announcements make Big Wave Surfing one of the top business books of 2011-2012. With nine awards in 2011, and nine already in 2012, it continues to remain popular with both reviewers and readers.

According to the author, Dr. Thurber, "I wrote Big Wave Surfing as an analogy to show how disruption causes big waves to form and that these disruptions will have far-reaching economic, political and social effects.

"As the book points out, it's critical to be able to spot these big waves forming. We talk about them from a technological perspective, but it's clear that technology is rapidly altering our business, social and political landscape."

Thurber continues, "We live in interesting times. Our true measure will be how well we adapt not only to the speed of change, but the results of these changes. I believe my book will help people begin to understand and deal with these changes. I have spent a lifetime in the computer business, a business that can change radically every 12-18 months, sometimes sooner. We are talking about disruption, and often extreme techniques are needed to deal with this disruption."

Thurber says like the physical surfers who ride the big waves at a beach like Mavericks these new concepts won't "always be pretty and in fact it may be down-right dangerous. There will be winners. There will be wipeouts and losers. But if we don't boldly embrace the next wave, the innovation economy, then profound structural changes will occur in American society."
