LAKE CITY, S.C., April 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Glass artist Alison Sigethy (http://www.alisonsigethy.com) was among 400 individuals selected to display their work at the third annual ArtFields festival and contest in Lake City, South Carolina. From April 24 through May 2, one of her unique, signature Sea Core Bubble Tubes will grace the front window of Merle Norman Cosmetics at 117 West Main Street.

"When we were selecting a piece for display, Alison's sculpture definitely stood out," explained Leigh Clark, owner of Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio in Lake City. "The Sea Core is beautiful and peaceful. Customers always have something to say about the sculpture, and passersby often stop in their tracks to study the colors and watch the bubbles. Since the first ArtFields (http://www.artfieldssc.org/) festival in 2013, organizers have envisioned an event that grows deep roots into the local community, immersing both residents and visitors in the artistic currents that flow around them. Making that goal possible is the buy-in of local business owners, who agree to provide venues for the display of participating artists' works. Likewise, these same businesses offer time and space for artists' talks and receptions.
"I fully endorse the mission of the ArtFields organization," said Sigethy. "Art has a restorative power that is much needed in today's fast-paced world. My mission with the Sea Cores, like all my artwork, is to inspire the imagination. The movement of the water and the diversity of the Sea Core's glass components create a sublime whole that is endlessly fascinating."
Sigethy hopes to place her Sea Cores in cancer treatment centers and other health-care settings around the nation. She explains that the entrancing, soothing sound of the bubbling water is among the sculpture's most memorable qualities.
Sigethy's artist talk is scheduled for April 25 at 5:30 pm; later, meet-the-artist receptions are slated for April 26 from 1 to 3 pm and on May 1 from 3 to 5 pm. During her talk, Sigethy will discuss the conceptual process behind the development of a Sea Core and its components.
With $100,000 in prize money on the line, ArtFields has quickly become the largest arts event of its kind in the Southeast. This year saw a record number of submissions, and the juried panel was hard pressed to whittle the final list down to 400. Public voting, along with input from the panel, will determine the winners of the various cash prizes.
About the Artist
Alison Sigethy is a professional artist who works out of her studio in the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia. She graduated from Marymount University in Arlington with degrees in interior design and art history. Today, her work focuses on issues such as ocean conservation, sustainability, ecology and education. She has exhibited her work nationally, and her work has been featured in the American Craft Magazine, Christian Science Monitor, Washington Post and USA Today.
Sigethy's talents extend beyond fine art. She is a skilled kayaker, having competed in the Greenland National Kayak Championships, in which she has won eight medals. She has paddled most of the famed and treacherous Northwest Passage. In 2010, Sigethy was a member of the US team at the Harbin Snow and Ice Carving Competition.
