Aging Face? Give It a Lift

Everyone's face ages differently, so why should there be only one way to address it? If you are considering facial plastic surgery, get to know your options

BALTIMORE, Nov. 1, 2011 — Some people age well; others aren't as lucky – they look older than they feel. Sometimes it's genetics; sometimes it's lifestyle or stress. Fortunately, there are several procedures that can take years off your appearance and help you regain confidence.

The first step to a successful facial procedure is choosing a reputable surgeon who is board certified in plastic surgery. Qualifications and experience matter, as do personality and aesthetics. Find a surgeon who listens to what you want and can offer learned suggestions about how to help you get there.

The next step is to consider the range of procedures available; you may only need a little help. A full face lift is no longer the only option to achieve a more youthful appearance. A neck lift, brow lift, or eyelid lift can smooth out excess skin in the area that most concerns you. A MACS face lift can add a firmer appearance to the lower part of your face and tighten up fleshy cheeks.

A neck lift focuses on the loose skin under your chin. The plastic surgeon makes a small incision to remove fat and tighten the muscles. A neck lift can also remove the visible vertical bands in your neck. After this procedure, your chin will appear more prominent, and your entire face will look younger and firmer.

A brow lift can significantly reduce the deep creases that form across your forehead and at the top of your nose. This procedure can also correct drooping eyebrows. You may consider a brow lift in combination with another procedure, depending on your cosmetic needs.

As you age, collagen and elastin production slows in the skin around your eyes. This causes your skin to pull away from the underlying muscle, creating wrinkles and sagging skin. You may notice changes around your eyes such as "crow's feet," wrinkles underneath your eyes, or drooping eyelids. An eyelid lift (or blepharoplasty) can smooth out those wrinkles and give your eyes a more open look. You can opt for an upper eyelid lift, a lower eyelid lift, or both.
