African American Chamber of Commerce, Hobbs Invites Orrin Checkmate Hudson to Inspire Participants to Be Someone!

HOBBS, N.M., Aug. 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Twelve years ago a malicious crime in Queens, N.Y., which took the lives of five Wendy's employees, forced Orrin "Checkmate" Hudson to reach out to children and young adults through the game of chess.

Hudson will bring his program, "Be Someone," which applies the same chess techniques and strategy of thinking two or three moves in advance to everyday life lessons, to the Hobbs High School on Thursday, August 30, 2012.

"You're always in a race between disaster and education," Hudson said. "If you get the education, you can prevent the disaster."

While the program does revolve around the game of chess, Hudson said it is less about chess and more about building character.

"You can make one move in life and never recover, and If you make smart moves you get smart results. Nature is neutral!" Hudson said. "I can teach them you can do incredible things with your life when you stop and think and ask yourself, is this true, is this honest, is this my best move?"

Helen Houston, office manager and editor for the African American Chamber of Commerce said Hudson's approach to use chess to teach the youth how to make the right choices fit right in with the beliefs of the Chamber.

"We're trying to get our youths to think ahead and to make the right decisions that will affect the rest of their lives," Helen added. "He has a unique way of bringing things that are so applicable and at the same time radical."

Helen said motivating the youth to believe they have what it takes to be successful is one of the most important things Hudson wishes the program to accomplish.

"If you think you're going to fail, it's easy for you to say I might as well not try," Ms. Houston said. "I want our youth to come out of this 'believing' they have everything inside of them to be someone."

The free event will be held at Hobbs High School 800 North Jefferson Street, Hobbs, NM, 88240, on Thursday from 9 a.m. and second presentation at 6 p.m.
