TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 18, 2011 — The American College of Physician Executives today announced the creation of a new award aimed at medical schools and teaching hospitals making extraordinary strides in promoting a culture of leadership, professionalism, communication and teamwork among medical students and residents.
Called the Leape Ahead Award, it recognizes those who create innovative and original projects that lead to a safer and higher quality environment for health care.
The award honors the extraordinary dedication and commitment of Dr. Lucian Leape, whose leadership has advanced the efficient, effective and caring delivery of medicine in the U.S. Eligible applicants may include any combination of faculty, students, residents and staff at a medical school or teaching hospital.
The winner of the Leape Ahead Award will be announced by February 15, 2012, and will receive an engraved plaque, have their project published in the Physician Executive Journal, ACPE's journal of medical management, and present at ACPE's Annual Business Meeting Luncheon on April 27, 2012, in San Francisco. Up to four members of the project team will receive free tuition to the meeting for the presentation.

Dr. Lucian Leape is internationally recognized as a leader of the patient safety movement since publication of his seminal article, Error in Medicine, in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in 1994. He is an outspoken advocate of the non-punitive systems approach to the prevention of medical errors and has talked and written widely about the need to make patient safety a national priority.
This award was created by ACPE's volunteer Task Force on Medical Education, led by Susan L. Freeman, MD, MS, CPE, FACPE and Kendall M. Rogers, MD, CPE in an effort to meet its goal of promoting leadership training for medical students and residents. The award is fully funded by ACPE.
"Our ultimate goal is to improve health care outcomes and patient safety throughout the continuum of care," said Freeman. "We hope this award will be used as a springboard for better educational efforts for all medical students and residents."
