$30,000 Grant Awarded to the Himalayan Stove Project by the Halton Foundation

Grant supports Himalayan Stove Project's program in the Trans-Himalayan region

TAOS, N.M., Nov. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — "Everyone has a right to healthy indoor air" is the motto of the Halton Foundation, which supports non-profit organizations that promote wellbeing of people suffering from poor indoor environmental air quality. The Foundation awards annual grants to non-profit organizations, research programs or initiatives promoting the wellbeing of people in indoor environments.

The Halton Foundation has granted $30,000 to the Himalayan Stove Project in support of their project of improving heath of people in the trans-Himalayan region.

More than half of the world's population, mostly in developing countries, rely on polluting biomass fuels to meet their basic energy needs. Cooking and heating using open fires or primitive stoves causes unhealthy levels of indoor air pollution which kills almost 2 million people each year – the fourth largest public health issue in the world.

The health impacts are disproportionate on women and children as they are the most engaged with the cooking. Consequently, over 50% of all indoor air pollution-attributable deaths occur in children under five years old. (WHO Fact sheet No292: Indoor Air Pollution and Health, 2005)

The Himalayan Stove Project is dedicated to improving the health of the people in the trans-Himalayan region. The organisation provides free, clean-burning, highly fuel-efficient cook stoves to families living in the Himalayas who now cook with traditional, rudimentary stoves or over open fire pits inside their homes, consuming excessive amounts of precious fuel and polluting the indoor air to dangerously unhealthy levels.

Replacing open cooking fires and primitive stoves, improves health and quality of life of families by reducing indoor air pollution significantly. It also decreases environmental damage in the fragile and sensitive Himalayan ecosystem by reducing de-forestation and reducing carbon emissions.

Tarja Takki, Chairman of the Board of the Halton Foundation said, "Himalayan Stove Project's work on improving indoor air quality affects quality of life and health of families in Himalayan region. Improving indoor air quality in developing countries is a major challenge and is a special interest of the Foundation. We are happy to be able to contribute to this program. With Halton Foundation's $30,000 contribution, Himalayan Stove Project is able to acquire stoves for 300 families."

"We are honored to have been selected by the Halton Foundation as a recipient of their generous grant. We appreciate their acknowledgement of the value of our work, and intend to make them proud of their confidence in us," said George Basch, "Chief Cook" of the Himalayan Stove project.

"Our organization is staffed totally by volunteers who pay all of their own expenses (including travel to Nepal). Consequently our overhead is minimal and essentially all contributions go to acquiring and delivering stoves, (including payments into the local economy for necessary materials, transport and support)."
