The ranking is based on financial endowment, which is defined as the financial trust available to each college through cash or other assets such as property. Endowments are used to fund new facilities, the latest technologies, research projects, professorships, and of course, student scholarships. "Although money isn't everything, the size of a university's endowment is a measure of its wealth – and a deeper purse can bring benefits for would-be students," said NonProfitCollegesOnline.com's founder and lead editor, J. Alder. "This ranking was compiled to show people which universities have the most financial clout, and, in theory, the greatest ability to support the students that come their way."

In a higher education landscape increasingly influenced by for-profit corporate interests, NonProfitCollegesOnline.com explores the role of money in higher education and works to bring attention to colleges and universities that demonstrate a commitment to putting students before profits and education before the bottom line.
