TIPS Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Preventing Drunk Driving, Underage Drinking

Offers Free Information Sheet: "Ten Tips for Hosting a Responsible Holiday Party"

ARLINGTON, VA – Nov. 20, 2002 — To celebrate the TIPS program's twentieth holiday season in the fight against alcohol-related tragedies, Health Communications, Inc. (HCI) is offering a free information sheet, "Ten Tips for Hosting a Responsible Holiday Party." The sheet is available upon request to visitors at the TIPS Website (www.gettips.com).

Twenty years ago, Health Communications, Inc. (HCI) developed TIPS, the first-of-its-kind program designed to promote responsibility in the sale and consumption of alcohol. The TIPS approach — Training for Intervention Procedures — involves training individuals around the drinker to spot signs of intoxication and prevent alcohol-related problems such as drunk driving, underage drinking and drunkenness. Today there are over 1.5 million TIPS-certified trainers and servers in 23 countries and TIPS is widely recognized as instrumental in reducing alcohol-related injuries and deaths.

The most widely recognized alcohol server training program in the U.S., TIPS is used in all 50 states. It is the only program to offer national classroom training and rigorous certification procedures. TIPS also boasts the industry's most robust record-keeping system, making TIPS certification histories available to courts, liquor commissions, and clients. TIPS has also been endorsed by the insurance industry and state alcohol regulators. In recognition of the program's value, TIPS-certified clients receive up to 25% off their liquor liability insurance premiums, and some courts reduce fines for establishments that implement TIPS training.

"We have made TIPS training an integral part of our beverage programming at Marriott Hotels for several years," said Brian Yost, Vice President of Beverage for Marriott Hotels International. "The TIPS program provides us with a high quality, consistent approach to responsible service that is critical in today's environment."

TIPS provides professional training programs to sellers and servers of alcohol in on- and off premise establishments, including concessions, casinos, convenience stores and social functions. Consumer programs are centered around universities, parents, seniors and the workplace. Interested persons who would like to bring TIPS training to their communities may complete the TIPS Train-the- Trainer class to join our nationwide network of over 30,000 TIPS trainers.

"Our mission with TIPS has always been to reduce alcohol-related problems through education," said Adam F. Chafetz, President and CEO of Health Communications, Inc. "We have made considerable progress toward that goal in the last two decades, but our work is ongoing. HCI will continue to offer innovative products and services that help ensure that alcohol is sold responsibly and used responsibly in our society."
