Kessler incorporates advanced technology to help amputees walk
SADDLE BROOK, N.J., Aug. 4, 2009 — Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation (http://www.kessler-rehab.com) is the only hospital in New Jersey and one of the first rehabilitation centers in the country to offer amputees the new PROPRIO FOOT(R), a prosthesis that provides greater flexibility and mobility to its users. This advanced bionic technology, developed by Ossur, a global leader in orthopedic products, closely replicates the function of a natural foot and enables wearers to walk with a more natural and balanced gait.
This high-tech prosthesis earned its name and positive reviews from patients for its ability to detect where the foot is in space — proprioception. Utilizing leading-edge sensor technology and artificial intelligence, the foot is able to identify changes in terrain, slopes and stairs and instruct the ankle to flex appropriately. "The advances in bionic technology are simply amazing," said Kessler prosthetist Joe Reda, who is among the first technicians in the nation to be certified in the fitting of this device. "Kessler clients who have already received this new PROPRIO FOOT are thrilled. They walk better, move more comfortably and can even sit down and get up more easily. They're also able to wear different types of shoes as the foot can easily be adjusted to varying heel heights without compromising proper alignment."
The foot's anatomically correct response creates a more symmetrical and balanced gait, reducing the need to "hip hike" and load body weight on the sound limb. This puts less strain on the leg, knees, hips and back. "Basically, this new technology enables us to more closely replicate the natural functioning of the lost limb and create a better prosthesis for our amputee clients," continues Reda.
Clients are evaluated by a team of Kessler specialists and fitted for the prosthesis. They are also trained on the proper use and maintenance of the device.
