New Book Explores the Adage 'It Takes a Village to Raise a Child'
HARRISBURG, Pa., June 10, 2010 — There is an old African proverb that says, "When an old man dies, a library burns to the ground." It is a sentiment that gives nod to the value of age and experience. Author Boureima Seyni Seybou seconds that feeling. In his new book, Fabric of an Education (published by AuthorHouse), Seybou details the importance of having grandparents become actively involved in the education of their grandchildren.
Seybou knows first hand the benefits of being taught by one's grandparent. A native of Niger, Seybou learned many life lessons from his paternal grandmother, Bori. "She knew our genealogy by heart," Seybou recalls. "She also knew the links that united our different families. Moreover, she knew the medicinal properties of plants and trees in the area." The lessons Seybou's grandmother taught him where often in the form of parables. At the conclusion of a memorable parable about a poor man wallowing in self-pity, his grandmother stated, "If someone tells you that he has no shoes, tell him that there are some who have no feet."
In Fabric of an Education, Seybou also shows the transformative power of education on cultural norms. In response to the fact that a number of cultures do not condone the educating of girls, Seybou explains the importance of education for all members of a community and how a community is strengthened as a result. While many Islamic communities forgo the education of its daughters in favor of arranged marriages, Seybou hopes Fabric of an Education marks the beginning of overturning this norm. He writes:

Boureima Seyni Seybou was born in a small village in the country of Niger. He moved to the United States in 2004, where he would later meet his wife. Fabric of an Education is his first book.
