Choices for Net Metering Customers Continue to Expand

Featuring the award winning ROSE Cottage Project, a zero-net-energy home as seen on RCMZeroEnergy.com

CONCORD, N.H., May 4, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — The H L Turner Group Inc. (Turner Group) was an early adopter of the use of distributed energy resources (DER), starting with PURPA enabled hydropower projects in the early '80s.  Today, our renewable energy work also focuses on designing qualifying power applications, together with High Performance Building systems, to enable Zero Energy Building (ZEB) construction.  Navigant Research estimates this global market growth to reach $1.4 trillion by 2035, with zero net energy homes (ZNEHs) in North America to reach 27,000 in 2025.

Harold Turner, PE, President & CEO of The H L Turner Group Inc., commented:  "The use of net metering is essential in undertaking the construction of Net Zero Energy or Zero Net Energy (ZNE) projects that produce as much energy as they consume.  New options continue to emerge in utility areas around the country that also include group net metering; virtual net metering; and "solar garden" net metering programs. Especially in high energy cost areas like the Northeast, customers are looking for ways to both use less energy and buy less utility supplied energy. No longer do electric utility customers need to install their own solar PV panels (power source) on their property to participate in net metering, unless that is their best option."

"Although the installation of individual residential solar arrays is the most widespread application of net metering in the US, the future potential of larger off-site qualifying facilities offers tremendous economy of scale and broader net metering participation. The use Hydro, Wind and other available renewable technologies will also become more prevalent as states create policies that allow more group participation" ….. "which will also capture a larger share of commercial and industrial customers. Recently published costs for solar PV in Texas demonstrate just how much pricing competition is already in the marketplace for self-generation options."

The Turner Group undertook the ROSE Cottage Project in 2011 to demonstrate what could be accomplished on a residential scale of ZEB construction. The project was completed in late 2012 and is located in the capital city of Concord, NH. In addition to being a net-zero home, this green building project features multi-generational use and aging-in-place features as part of a sustainable design that incorporates long life cycle values.  A net metered 13.8kw solar PV system is incorporated in the project, as well as a Bosch solar hot water and ground source heat pump system.

The ROSE Cottage Project was also the first building constructed in conjunction with the privately funded RCMZeroEnergy.com educational website created to promote the use of ZEB construction through a web-based contact with consumers, builders, and developers. The site also offers a free e-newsletter, "The Zero Net," that provides up to date ZNE industry news.
